(Award-winning romantic comedy--novel length) Raised by vegetarian hippies with an organic produce farm, Abbie Greenwood wants to save lots of the world. But the L.A. TV station where she works being a consumer reporter won't let her do the globally important stories she really wants to do, now the guys upstairs are suggesting she mix somewhat of the nasty into her helping-people segments to raise the--already high--ratings. Afraid the tv screen biz is going to suck out her soul, Abbie agrees to look at all the time-off she's saved and housesit to be with her sister in the suburbs of Houston where conservatism and good barbequing skills are highly rated. But, it'll leave her with time alone to re-evaluate her life, or, at least, give the guys upstairs time for this to find out how ratings plummet without her.
Once in Houston, Abbie leads to a raucous which has a column she guest-writes for her sister's neighborhood newsletter and butts heads using the president in the homeowner's association from through the street. Rick's a genuine hunk (yum!) of a lawyer (yuck!) who drives a pricy pickup (wasting natural resources), is an ex-rodeo cowboy (too macho, but kinda hot) and continues to be proven to vote conservatively sometimes (dead faint). Unfortunately, he's also irresistible and available since his wife took off, leaving him using their six-year-old daughter. 
After some malicious neighborhood mischief followed by the hot encounter as part of his kitchen, Abbie decides she'd better stay away or this guy could change her life in the way she never thought she wanted. But when her volunteer job, teaching English like a Second Language, gets her arrested on suspicion of smuggling illegal aliens, who is the sole emergency contact her sister left? Mr. Hunky-Annoying-Across-the-Street-Lawyer, of course. And as Abbie feels herself getting sucked in by Rick, she realizes life's decisions aren't always as grayscale as she'd like them to be.

Content warning: If you might have an aversion to idealists, liberals, women with strong personalities, dogs, brownies, occasional pieces of strong language, the Chupacabra, or hot cowboy-turned-lawyers, this book is probably not for you. If you hate to laugh (and even perhaps cry a little), run away screaming, now! (Don't say I didn't warn you!)

I loved Bridget Jones's Diary (book and movie). It's my job to consider Abbie in Don't Make Me make You Brownies because the anti-Bridget Jones because, as opposed to looking toward obtaining a husband and family, Abbie inadvertently stumbles one and tries her far better to combat the possibility of being a desperate housewife.
As women, I think many of us "wake up" at some time and wonder what happened for the person we utilized to be. But since we live in real life, these things take place more gradually. Time is compressed and situations are exaggerated in fiction, so Abbie sees a whole new scary life barreling toward her just like a freight train...and that's the place that the fun comes in.
